As previously announced, The Earth Being was involved in the Ecofest, which was held on the weekend of April 29th-30th 2006. The organization was leader of the food committee for the event. Here thus a short assessment of the experience...

Several members The Earth Being took part throughout the week in the search and gathering of food (bread, fruit and vegetables) in containers and shops in several strategic points of the city to prepare enough food for an estimated thousand (1000) people!!

The menu, entirely vegetarian, was as follows:

• Curry couscous salad with tomatoes and vegetables
• Fresh garden salad
• Super tasty vegepate sandwiches!
• Stewed fruits with pears
• Fruit salad with mint

All these dishes were prepared in the ovens of People's Potato and Food not Bombs at Concordia University, on Friday and Saturday afternoon, thanks to the effort of several members The Earth Being, all of this in a festive and convivial atmosphere.

The participation of The Earth Being within the food committee for Ecofest made it possible to create a network for large-food-needs alternative events. Also the volunteers learned everything about finding free food sources and how to prepare it.

Food was thus ready for 1000 people, which in the facts largely exceeded the real needs at the time of the event. So we gave the food surplus (vegetables, bread, a bit of the two salads and an impressive quantity of our vegepate) to the organizations of Concordia that generously helped us.

We also took the initiative of spontaneously going to the Mount-Royal on Sunday afternoon, just in the middle of the tamtams session, to promote the festive evening at the Ecofest which was held the same day. A great number of vegepate sandwiches were shared, all this totally free. However, this time we didn't have enough : with those thousands of people at the mountain! Quickly we ran out of food. This experiment was super, extremely fun. We hope to repeat it as fast as possible ! Everybody laughed, enjoyed and was stuffed in the end!

The Earth Being wants to thank all members who voluntarily offered their valuable time, spirit and enthusiasm: your presence made the project a success and it is very appreciated!

Furthermore, the (CBC) Radio-Canada TV show named "5/5" had already contacted the organization following a question which it had received on behalf of a citizen about "food waste". The reporters filmed our gathering, cooking and distributing activites! Prerpare to see The Earth Being on TV once again in september!

Finally, this second financing activity of The Earth Being was a success, in spite of very high estimate at the beginning of the project: the weekend on food, the sales of hand-made soap as well as the intervention at Mount-Royal made it possible to pile up roughly 500$. It also helped the organization to promote its mission and its values, this by revalorizing the splendid gifts of our overconsumption society...

In short, the experience will be very certainly only a first time, to be reapeated, since the work seemed to please all the participating members. When should we do this again?
